The Fray’s first single from their new self-titled album is “You Found Me.” The Fray will perform this song at the American Music Awards on Nov. 23 on ABC. The song now even has its own Wikipedia page. Here is a video they put together with the song: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=46878924
The track is streaming on The Fray’s website (thefray.net), and here you are able to pre-order the deluxe version of the new album that releases on Feb. 3 with a bonus digital set of live recordings from their January ‘09 tour dates. Other extras include an expanded insert and a 90-minute DVD with making of and behind the scenes footage. The single is now available on iTunes as well as a pre-order of the standard version of the album (although there is a digital-exclusive track and also a pre-order-exclusive track).
As best as I can tell, below are the lyrics from the final studio version. In a Reuters article about the new album, it was revealed that this song is asking the question about why bad things happen to good people after some of their friends and family went through very tough times.
In fact, one night, a rendition of “Happiness” was dedicated to Christian street monk and author Shane Claiborne after his community’s residence was completely burned down (the video is from 4 days after the fire). The article said the lyrics were written over 2 years ago, so the song is not directly related to this 2007 incident, but the tension between their faith and events like this is evident. I met Shane back in February and told him that they had dedicated the song to him and his friends one night on tour, and he told me that they were great guys and good friends. I am sure that he would be proud of their very public wrestling with very hard issues. Now, on to the lyrics…
You Found Me
By Isaac Slade/Joe King/The Fray
//Verse 1//
I found God
On the corner of First and Amistad
Where the west
Was all but won
All alone
Smoking his last cigarette
I said, “Where you been?”
He said, “Ask anything.”
//Verse 2//
Where were you
When everything was falling apart?
All my days
Were spent by the telephone
That never rang
And all I needed was a call
It never came
To the corner of First and Amistad
//Chorus 1//
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, You found me
//Verse 3//
In the end
Everyone ends up alone
Losing her
The only one who’s ever known
Who I am
Who I’m not, and who I want to be
No way to know
How long she will be next to me
//Chorus 2//
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, You found me
//Bridge//
Early morning
The city breaks
I’ve been calling
For years and years and years and years
And you never left me no messages
You never sent me no letters
You got some kind of nerve
Taking all I want
//Chorus 3 and outro//
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Where were you, where were you?
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, You found me
Why’d you have to wait
To find me, to find me?
Here’s what Isaac had to say on their website about the song:
“You Found Me is a tough song for me. Its about the disappointment, the heart ache, the let down that comes with life. Sometimes you’re let down, sometimes you’re the one who lets someone else down. It gets hard to know who you can trust, who you can count on. This song came out of a tough time, and I’m still right in the thick of it. There’s some difficult circumstances my family and friends have been going through over the past year or so and can be overwhelming. It wears on me. It demands so much of my faith to keep believing, keep hoping in the unseen. Sometimes the tunnel has a light at the end, but usually they just look black as night. This song is about that feeling, and the hope that I still have, buried deep in my chest.”

Poetic, huh? They do seem to speak from the heart. I have read in many places about how people feel so connected to this song, and I must concur. It’s simply great music.
